The Physician Summary

“She had nothing to fear. With him, she would always be in control.”

Sophia Adkins had always known her worth, as a friend, a girlfriend, and a highly qualified medical scientist. When one unpredictable night changes the trajectory of her entire life plan, Sophia questions everything – and everyone.

***…

Dr Zach Hayes knows a few things with certainty. How to deliver bad news gently, how to (successfully) apply for a research grant, and how to keep his love life to ‘one night only’. But when a past one night stand ends up as his new research colleague, what is he supposed to do?

Definitely not offer her co-authorship of the paper. And definitely not get tangled in a ruse as her fake date to her ex’s wedding.

When two researchers have intense chemistry outside as well as inside the lab, sparks are going to fly. Be careful not to get burnt…

The Physician Review

I can’t review this book using the CAWPILE method because the book is quite generic and a paint-by-numbers type of book so if I were to use the CAWPILE method all the points would fall into the category of “yeah, it’s aight.”.

Honestly, I would have given this book a higher rating if the following plot points did not happen because when I read said plot points my mind just could not get over the what-in-the-fuckery is this.

First of all, Sophia has this memory blackout issue that happens early on in the book and it’s never explained nor does it ever come up again. Sophia and her best friend, Nefertari, chalk it up to Sophia’s way of processing something traumatic being all “oh that still happens huh?”

And I am here like…

Shouldn’t you get this checked especially if this isn’t the first time this happened? Like this sounds pretty serious.

How this memory blackout was swept under the rug so nonchalantly made me lose my immersion of this book because really WTF.

Another aspect that annoyed me when reading this book was how Sophia and Zach especially Zach INSISTS their feelings for each other are platonic and that THEY’RE JUST BEST FRIENDS.

Like Zach, buddy, get your head out of your ass with the whole oh Sophia is just a BEST FRIEND. Be a man, admit you have feelings for her and acknowledge that right now isn’t a good time for her to jump into a new relationship when she just got out of a long term relationship.

Because I have a guy best friend too, and neither of us have sexual dreams or intentions with each other. That’s just weird.

It was this book that cemented in me my deep dislike of pet names, especially when y’all just got to know each other which honestly ties into my point of being annoyed that they insist they’re just best friends.

Our main characters are in their late 20s and early 30s and Zach’s pet name for Sophia is sunflower which irks me because are we in high school? This isn’t cute because again these two insist on seeing each other as best friends so what’s the deal with the pet names?

The second worst part of the book for me was when Zach finally came clean to Sophia of his past and this man is in the trenches with his feelings.

I am talking ugly crying feels and Sophia this crazy person went and licked Zach’s face.

You read that right, LICKED HIS FACE.

Because she said when she was a child that’s how her dog comforted her when she was crying and I am here thinking,

“Yes ma’am, that’s because IT’S A DOG!”

The absolute worst part of the book was the fact that I knew a sex scene would happen soon after AND I WAS RIGHT. Okay in the authors defense the sex scene was cut short after a fire alarm went off but that was not the point.

The point was how gross it was that Sophia made a move on Zach RIGHT AFTER he told her something personal that affected him and how emotional he was when doing so.

In my eyes, it looked like she took advantage through emotional manipulation and yes you can say I am overreacting but let’s swap their genders.

If Zach did this to Sophia, would we all collectively say it’s not emotional manipulation to get into her pants? Just because it’s a romance book and it’s fiction doesn’t make it okay.

Reading all these things altogether just made the overall reading experience worse for me.
